Whale Wise

Whale Wise aim to promote a harmonious relationship between humans and whales through scientific research and public engagement, combining science with local knowledge to foster sustainable human practices.

Protecting our planet can never be achieved through solo efforts alone. Whale Wise’s team consists of volunteers, visiting students, and numerous other contributors, who are united by a shared passion for marine conservation and beautiful cetaceans.

Whale Wise use a three step approach to their work:

RESEARCH

Using novel and trusted methods to monitor the interactions between human activity and whale populations.

ENGAGEMENT

Sharing their research and passion for whales through a variety of online and in-person platforms.

CONSERVATION

By informing policy and the public through our work, Whale Wise aim to translate their research into conservation action.

RESEARCH

Current projects include assessing whale-watching impacts, acoustic monitoring, whale distribution, changes during Covid-19 and investigating vessel strikes & entanglement.

ENGAGEMENT

Whale Wise believe that in order to make a difference, sharing their work with the public is essential – not only to spread the word about their research, but also to allow others to provide feedback on what they do.

They do this both online and offline, sharing their findings through visual images and films as well as at in person events in their local community.

Currently, partnered with University of Iceland and Barba, Whale Wise are creating a virtual reality (VR) programme with schools and museums in Iceland, Norway and Denmark using 360 footage captured during the Arctic Sense expedition of research, wildlife and climatic highlights. Within this, problem-solving tasks related to fieldwork and data analysis will provide real-life applications of national school curricula related to science, maths and sustainability.

How is Whale Wise funded?

Whale Wise is a charity with a team consisting of entirely volunteers. The team is currently unpaid and runs the charity purely on grants, donations and earnings from other part-time jobs. By donating, you can support Whale Wise’s research and engagement projects, help them to buy the necessary equipment to continue their research, and help to create an equitable work place where the team can earn a fair living wage.
